About Me: Authentic Learning Journeys

A Single Piece of Chalk: Where My Journey Began

My path as an educator started forty years ago with a small, unexpected spark in a quiet classroom. It was an era when students sat passively, memorizing lectures and transcribing every word from the blackboard. One day, my Han-mun (Classical Chinese) teacher handed me a piece of chalk and said, “Hey, Eun-joo(My original Korean name), I think you have better handwriting than I do. Would you mind writing today’s lesson on the board for me?” That rare, encouraging moment changed everything. Standing before my peers, taking action instead of just listening, ignited a fire within me. That small recognition transformed a shy girl into someone who found joy in learning and dared to dream of one day becoming a teacher who could awaken the potential in others.

Rigid Discipline to Deeper Reflection

Not every memory of learning was warm, however. I still remember a high school ‘Nursing and Drill’ exam where I had to bandage a classmate’s head within a strict 30-second limit. I was so nervous that I dropped the gauze, and in that instant, I was given a zero. In those days, rigid rules often took precedence over a student’s individual circumstances. For a long time, I viewed such strictness as a barrier to true education. As I matured into an educator myself, my perspective shifted. I began to understand the weight of objective standards and the necessity of discipline in managing a diverse group of learners. Yet, I remained concerned: in an age of personalized learning, could unyielding strictness stifle growth? This question led me to my greatest educational challenge yet.

The IB Philosophy: Where Freedom Meets Excellence

This search for balance is what drew me to the IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum. I discovered a framework that deeply respects a student’s autonomy, individuality, and voice, while simultaneously upholding rigorous global standards. IB education does not seek to control students through conformity; rather, it provides a clear, high-level framework that empowers individuals to reach their fullest potential. It was this global value—cultivating independent thinkers within a culture of excellence—that inspired me to embrace this journey as an IB educator.

Bridging Yesterday and Tomorrow

Today, I stand in my classroom in Hawaii, facing a new generation of learners. Just as my teacher once handed me that piece of chalk, I strive to be a warm guide who draws out the unique strengths of every student. Though the tools of education have changed, I believe the heart of teaching remains the same: believing in a child’s possibility is the most powerful force for change.

“Thank you for joining me on this journey where student autonomy shines. 감사합니다!”
