This project, conducted simultaneously in the APIS Korean Language and Culture Class and the Korean Studies and Comparative Perspectives Class, focuses on encouraging students to express their creative thoughts, recognize the value of cultural elements in the global market, and develop skills to meet the diverse demands of future societies, beyond merely acquiring knowledge. Below are the objectives and expected educational outcomes of this course. It is also crucial to thoroughly understand the content of the upcoming exhibition for a successful presentation.

First, Deepening Cultural Understanding: Students will investigate Korea’s geography and specialty products, gaining an appreciation for the diversity and richness of Korean cultural heritage. This fosters an enhanced respect and understanding of other cultures among students.

Second, Creative Thinking and Innovative Approaches: By reinterpreting Korean cultural heritage from their own perspectives and exploring contemporary applications, students develop their creative thinking skills. Additionally, conceiving ideas to commercialize cultural heritage enhances their creativity from an economic standpoint.

Third, Enhancing Global Communication Skills: Producing posters in Korean and presenting in English or Japanese helps students develop the ability to communicate effectively in a multilingual environment.

Fourth, Improving Research and Presentation Skills: Through the process of collecting and organizing information for presentations, students enhance their research and presentation skills. This helps them effectively communicate their ideas and knowledge, boosting their confidence.

Fifth, Personal Connection and Recognition of Cultural Value: Students explore the relevance and impact of Korean cultural heritage on their own lives and values, fostering an understanding of its importance on a personal level and motivating them to preserve and develop it.

Sixth, Display and Evaluation of Creative Outputs: By exhibiting their project results and receiving feedback from a diverse audience, students have the opportunity to reflectively evaluate their work, accept feedback from others, and develop better ideas.

Exhibition Introduction

  • Purpose: This project is designed to deepen understanding of various Korean cultural heritages after exploring Korea’s geography and specialties. It encourages students to creatively reinterpret these elements incorporating their unique ideas, potentially globalizing or commercializing unfamiliar Korean cultural heritages, thus fostering creative capacities for future societal needs.
  • Expected Outcome: Each student or group will create a “Trifold Poster” in English, and Korean, incorporating appropriate photos, drawings, and actual models, to showcase and present their research process.

Exhibition Preparation

  • Topic Selection: Students freely choose a Korean cultural heritage item of interest (e.g., kimchi, jangseung, ondol, hanok, Samulnori, the Taegeukgi, Hanwoo, feng shui, makgeolli, Patbingsu, Seokguram, bibimbap, Gwanghwamun, pansori) to present briefly in class.
  • Research: Starting with the presented material, students will gather information about Korea’s geography, specialties, history, and cultural heritage from various sources including the internet, libraries, and interviews.

Poster Components

  1. Introduction: A brief introduction and definition of the selected cultural heritage.
  2. Historical Background and Regional Relevance: The historical context and regional characteristics where the cultural heritage developed.
  3. Cultural Importance: Why is this cultural heritage important? What values does it hold?
  4. Personal Relevance: How does this cultural heritage relate to and impact your life and values?
  5. Globalization Potential: How can this cultural heritage be introduced to the world? Are there modern reinterpretations or creative product or service ideas?
  6. Marketing Plan: If you were to sell your idea, what would you sell, at what price, and how? Consider your target customers, pricing strategy, and promotions, and sketch or create actual models of the product design.
